Contraindications

Ashiatsu is a deeply transformative barefoot massage technique. Because of the profound depth and mechanical force applied during a session, certain health conditions—referred to as contraindications—may mean this modality is not appropriate for you at this time. My priority is your safety and the long-term benefit of your wellness journey. Below, I define how these force-related considerations apply to my unique work.

Absolute Contraindications

Pregnancy

Recent Surgeries

Acute Infections

Ashiatsu massage is an absolute contraindication during all trimesters of pregnancy due to increased risk factors. Always consult with your doctor before scheduling.

Post-operative care requires a minimum wait of 6 to 12 weeks before receiving deep Ashiatsu. Compressive pressure can interfere with surgical sutures, fresh scars, or increase the risk of dislodging clots during the active healing phase. Furthermore, any implants placed within the past nine months are an absolute contraindication for deep Ashiatsu in that area. Spinal surgeries involving hardware such as pins, plates, or rods are also a contraindication for deep Ashiatsu over the affected area.

If you are experiencing a fever, flu, or contagious skin condition, massage can circulate the illness through your system and stress your body further. Please reschedule for your own safety and the safety of your therapist.

Blood Clots & Hemophilia

Heart Conditions

Osteoporosis

Known or suspected Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and hemophilia are absolute contraindications. The intense mechanical force applied during Ashiatsu could dislodge a blood clot or result in internal hemorrhage for those with bleeding disorders.

Uncontrolled high/low blood pressure, recent heart attack, or any condition involving a pacemaker, stent or shunt  require physician consent. Ashiatsu significantly shifts systemic circulation, which can strain a compromised cardiovascular system.

The intense weight and leverage typical of Ashiatsu can be dangerous for those with compromised bone density. Extreme cases of osteoporosis or recent fractures are strict contraindications for this deep modality.

Other Absolute Contraindications

Acute liver, kidney, urinary disorders, acute inflammatory conditions, persons on Coumadin, Lovenox, Heparin, or heavy Aspirin (bruise/clots), Cortisone. Any disorder that causes loss of feeling or motor control, acute neurological disorders. AIDS, Hodgkin's disease, Cancer, Leukemia, acute reproductive disorders. Recent injection (cosmetic or steroid). Severe Diabetes. Disk Herniation, Spondylolisthesis.

Common Local Contraindications

Relative or local contraindications are situations where Ashiatsu remains safe and beneficial, but specific areas are avoided or the technique is modified. Transparency about your physical state allows me to provide the most effective recovery without risk.

Localized Inflammation

Conditions where I avoid specific areas like localized inflammation or acute swelling to prevent aggravating damaged tissues.

Skin Irritations or Rashes

I bypass any active rashes, irritations, or broken skin to ensure hygiene and avoid spreading or worsening the condition.

Varicose Veins

Deep, vertical pressure is strictly avoided directly over prominent varicose veins to protect vascular integrity and health.

Recent Localized Trauma

Areas with recent bruising, sharp pain, or localized injury are avoided to prevent pain and allow for natural structural recovery.

Healing Fractures

Any bone that is currently healing is bypassed. I only resume ashiatsu work on these areas once your doctor has confirmed full bone union.
